We’re thrilled to share that the Water Security Agency announced a significant increase in water releases from Lake Diefenbaker into the South Saskatchewan River. Thanks to recent rainfall in Alberta and stronger-than-expected mountain runoff, river levels are expected to rise over the coming days, creating the conditions needed for safe Prairie Lily operations.<\/p>\n

The Prairie Lily will resume cruising on Tuesday, June 9, and we’re excited to welcome guests back aboard for this 2026 season reboot.<\/p>\n

This isn’t just good news for The Prairie Lily. The increased flows will help move sandbars, improve river conditions, and contribute to a healthier river ecosystem that the people of Saskatchewan and visitors can enjoy for years to come.<\/p>\n

The past few weeks have been challenging and unpredictable, but throughout it all, your patience, encouragement, and support have meant the world to us. We are especially grateful to everyone who reached out with kind messages, rebooked cruises, and cheered us on while we waited for the river conditions to improve. We want to provide an update regarding The Prairie Lily cruises over the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

The Prairie Lily returned to cruising this season with optimism following many discussions with the Saskatchewan Water Security Agency (WSA) throughout the winter regarding river conditions and anticipated water flows from Lake Diefenbaker. Based on information communicated by the WSA in a May 10 email, flows in the South Saskatchewan River were expected to remain between 220\u2013240 cms for the foreseeable future. Along with other encouraging projections, we proceeded with cruise scheduling and operations in good faith.<\/p>\n

However, late on Friday, May 22, the WSA reduced the water release from Gardiner Dam dramatically and immediately to 150 cms. Despite previous assurances, the WSA did not notify us, nor was the information updated on their website. The\u00a0river levels dropped rapidly and unexpectedly in Saskatoon by Sunday afternoon, May 24, creating unsafe and impassable conditions due to exposed sandbars and low water levels.<\/p>\n

Having successfully completed\u00a0sailings earlier that day, the rapidly deteriorating river conditions forced us to cancel our 4:00 Sunday afternoon cruise. After sending an email to the WSA on Sunday, we received a response late Monday afternoon acknowledging that the timing and magnitude of these reductions had not communicated in advance, and that this lack of notice contributed directly to the uncertainty experienced. We were further advised that the lower outflows are expected to continue through at least early June.<\/p>\n

As a result of the reduced water outflows, we regret to inform you that all scheduled Prairie Lily cruises up to and including June 4 have been cancelled. In addition, ticket sales for cruises scheduled between June 5 and June 18 have been temporarily suspended until river conditions improve.<\/p>\n

We will personally contact all guests holding tickets for cruises through June 4 regarding options to book\u00a0a later date, issue a gift certificate, or offer a refund. Guests with bookings between June 5 and June 18 will also be contacted directly should those cruises need to be cancelled.<\/p>\n

While this is frustrating, we remain hopeful. The WSA has indicated that flows are expected to increase again later next week and that conditions may improve moving forward. Seasonal runoff from the Rocky Mountains is still expected later in June, which historically increases water levels and river flow throughout the South Saskatchewan River system. Once those runoff patterns become more established, it should allow for more stable river conditions and more accurate forecasting and operational planning moving forward.<\/p>\n

It is important to also note that since first raising concerns with the WSA about the growing silting issue in June 2024, we have consistently advocated for a clear and proactive silt mitigation plan. Over the past two years, alongside others in the community, we have continued engaging with the WSA in planning discussions and advocating for clearer forecasting, timely communication, and greater operational transparency so the safest and most informed decisions can be made. To date, we are not aware of any formal silt mitigation plan being implemented.<\/p>\n

The support this community has shown The Prairie Lily means more to us than words can fully express. Despite these challenges, we remain committed to welcoming guests back onboard as soon as conditions safely allow. In the meantime, we\u2019re continuing to prepare for the season ahead, and if you see us on sailing around University Bridge, it\u2019s because we\u2019re training new crew members so we\u2019re ready to welcome you back when conditions improve.<\/p>\n

We will personally contact all guests holding tickets for cruises through June 4 regarding options to book\u00a0a later date, issue a gift certificate, or offer a refund. Guests with bookings between June 5 and June 18 will also be contacted directly should those cruises need to be cancelled.<\/p>\n

While this is frustrating, we remain hopeful. The WSA has indicated that flows are expected to increase again later next week and that conditions may improve moving forward. Seasonal runoff from the Rocky Mountains is still expected later in June, which historically increases water levels and river flow throughout the South Saskatchewan River system. Once those runoff patterns become more established, it should allow for more stable river conditions and more accurate forecasting and operational planning moving forward.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It is important to also note that since first raising concerns with the WSA about the growing silting issue in June 2024, we have consistently advocated for a clear and proactive silt mitigation plan. Over the past two years, alongside others in the community, we have continued engaging with the WSA in planning discussions and advocating for clearer forecasting, timely communication, and greater operational transparency so the safest and most informed decisions can be made. To date, we are not aware of any formal silt mitigation plan being implemented.<\/p>\n

The support this community has shown The Prairie Lily means more to us than words can fully express. Despite these challenges, we remain committed to welcoming guests back onboard as soon as conditions safely allow. In the meantime, we\u2019re continuing to prepare for the season ahead, and if you see us on sailing around University Bridge, it\u2019s because we\u2019re training new crew members so we\u2019re ready to welcome you back when conditions improve.<\/p>\n

Last night we enjoyed a wonderful dinner aboard the iconic Prairie Lily. Although the boat remained docked due to high sand and low water levels this season, the view was still spectacular, and the atmosphere was just as magical.<\/p>\n

The service was excellent, and the beautifully restored riverboat offered a unique and relaxing setting. As many locals know, it used to be nearly impossible to get cruise tickets\u2014so if you\u2019ve always wanted to experience the Prairie Lily but never had the chance, now is the perfect time.<\/p>\n

Whether it\u2019s dinner or cocktails with friends, we highly recommend coming out to support this cherished local gem. It\u2019s still a fantastic time aboard!<\/p>\n

p.s. Wear comfy shoes\u2014you\u2019ll want to stroll the deck and enjoy the ambiance. Bring a light sweater\u2014it can get breezy by the river. And responsibly enjoy their reasonably-priced cocktails!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

High Sand Levels and Low Water Levels in the South Saskatchewan River Stop The Prairie Lily from Cruising<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Dear Friends,<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s with heavy hearts that we have to let you know the water level in the South Saskatchewan River is so low that The Prairie Lily will have to cancel its final cruising season if no action is taken.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Typically, there is adequate water flow downstream from Lake Diefenbaker to keep the river navigable. Unfortunately, adequate water flow is no longer the case, and this has resulted in an accumulation of sand in the river. We would be able to cruise as scheduled if the Water Security Agency (WSA), the provincial government\u2019s agency responsible for the province\u2019s water resource management and controls the flow of water from the Gardiner Dam, would release enough water from Lake Diefenbaker to allow safe operation on the river.<\/span><\/p>\n

Based on his knowledge of the river and historical flows, Captain Mike projects Saskatoon would need a flow of 900cms for 72 hours to mitigate the problem. The WSA has not released any substantial water flows since 2020, causing this accumulation of sand in the river. The current WSA 10-day Provincial Forecast shows flows will be maintained at the lowest level of 60cms.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

We, along with other local businesses operating in and around the river, knew as early as last summer there was a problem with water levels in the river and we welcomed WSA CEO and their VP of Science and Licensing on a personal cruise with Captain Mike in the wheelhouse last July so they could see firsthand the concern before it became an issue. No action has been taken. We contacted them last week after doing our annual pre-cruising river survey to advise the river was not navigable. We were informed on Friday that they will not release any additional water from Gardiner Dam.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

We were all set and excited to welcome you for our final season of cruises starting this Saturday, May 10. We regret dearly that we will have to cancel all cruises this summer.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

But this is not just about us. We are just one of many river users in Saskatoon and Saskatchewan from the dam to Cumberland House and local festivals and events that will not be able to carry their plans forward into the summer. Without mitigation, even low draft, non-powered users like canoes and kayaks will not be able enjoy the river in future years.<\/span><\/p>\n
